The Society was founded in Vienna on December 10, 1970 as the Working Group for Internal Intensive Care Medicine following a decision by a committee of proponents. The proponents' committee met for the first time on April 23, 1970 for a joint meeting chaired by Prof. Deutsch and subsequently drew up the statutes of the society.

Mission:

• the promotion of non-profit research work in the field of internal intensive care medicine
• the training and further education of doctors working in internal medicine in this specialist field
• the support of research projects
